Team Building with Horses
Horses survival depends on a well functioning herd. On the right leader being in charge so the right decisions can be made without discussion and immediately when a predator appears.
The power of the herd
Horses are by nature excellent at choosing leaders and recognizing the weak points in a herd or team. This makes them an excellent tool for team building exercises. Team members can't fake it, as horses will see right through that, and horses can't lie.
Horses respond well to clear decisive leadership, but poorly to overbearing or indecisive leadership.
People love to talk, but they sometimes forget that a very big part of communication is non verbal communication, or body language.
Why nonverbal communication matters
The way you listen, look, move, and react tells the other person whether or not you care, if you’re being truthful, and how well you’re listening. When your nonverbal signals match up with the words you’re saying, they increase trust, clarity, and rapport. When they don’t, they generate tension, mistrust, and confusion.
If you want to become a better communicator, it’s important to become more sensitive not only to the body language and nonverbal cues of others, but also to your own.
Horses are much more aware of our body language than we are, after all that's how they communicate! They will respond immediately and clearly to our body language and help us understand more about how we come across with other people.
Team Building with horses
Relaxing together, discovering and experiencing something new? Yes it’s possible!
Heading outside with the entire team can be very effective. It offers the opportunity to see with new eyes what happens within a team. Working with horses offers a wide range of options and group exercises. These vary from having fun to deep analysis of the dynamic within a team. The horse herd is a metaphor for an optimal functioning team. The team does not need to have any experience with horses. The coach will provide safe perimeters together with the participants.
Themes that can be explored;
- Cooperation and involvement
- Atmosphere and dynamic within a team
- Maintaining and directing focus
- leading and being led
- Setting boundaries
- Problem solving
- And off course leadership
Horses are by nature herd animals. Everything revolves around the group and natural leadership plays a big role. Because of this horses are masters in group processes. They mirror precisely what your behavior and body language evokes in other people.
Team members see each other in a different light and the role of each team member in a group becomes clear. Conflicts or communication problems come to the surface and can finally, in a safe environment be solved.
Team building set up
The team building session with horses last 3-4 hours. Before the session the coach will explain the process and how horses live: in herds, as group animals and how they deal with leaders etc. After that you head into the ring where the horse is waiting.
The coach will ask you to make contact with the horse. Depending on the way you do this, you will receive feedback from the horse as well as the coach. Possible follow up exercises help you develop a relationship with the horse and the effects of your behavior and body language.
After the session you will discuss with the coach and your team what you experienced and what the horse taught you about yourself and the dynamics within the team.
The session is made to measure, according to the wishes and possibilities of the team. There is no horse riding within this session.
